-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI'm 49 years old. I have a light complexion with dark blond hair (I do color it to cover up the gray but blond is my natural color). I have dark brown eyes and pale lashes and brows. What are the best colors to use on my eyes to not only look younger but look great? Thanks.
-- Contributed by: LaurieHi Susan,
No problem! We're here to help, and if you ever have another question, please feel free to post it. Thanks again!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajThanks, Jacqueline. Sorry about the mixup!

Please leave you question for Dana on the Ask the Makeup Expert page. Dana will get back to you in about two weeks. Thanks very much for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi,
I need help with lipstick colors. My hair is medium golden brown with reddish tones. My eyes are olive green with lots of gold and amber flecks, so that they look light olive green in daylight and dark brownish khaki in dark light. My skin is pale. Peach and apricot colors look too orange and bright against my pale skin, but pinks look clownish and unnatural. Any ideas? Thank you.
-- Contributed by: SusanDear Dana,
I am a makeup artist living in Brooklyn doing it for over a year now, specializing for young brides and I am very confident that I am doing a great ob since all my business is with referrals. However I want to take it to the next level and try to start working for celebritiies or TV anchorwomen etc.. How do I take it to the next level ? Are there any agencies that could hook me up?
Bashy

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI am a light skinned Black female. I have Discoid Lupus Scars on my face. What is a good foundation I could use. I have tried Covermark, also Instant Cover. They were no help to me at all. Thanks for your help on this matter. I live in Central N.C.
-- Contributed by: AliciaHi Johnay,
No problem! Okay, first, you'll want to tackle your eyebrows (I say this because you say they are very thick). First:
- Take an old toothbrush or an eyebrow brush and brush all of the brow hairs straight up. Take a small scissors and cut straight across (horizontally) all of the hairs that are too long.
Now, take a look at the brow. After you've done the cutting things should look a bit neater. Don't tweeze for right now (that takes time and practice and if you get it wrong, you have to wait a long time for the hairs to grow back).
Now for color. This will really depend on your skin's undertone (cool, warm, etc), but there are some colors that should work well.
At Bobbi Brown you can try:
- Burnt Sugar (as an eyeshadow base)
- Camel
- Espresso
- Camel
For lip colors, try:
- Rum Raisin Lip Color
- New Plum
- New Dusk
Another great tip for lip color is to find one that is similar to your natural lip color. So, if you want a naked makeup look, then go with a lighter shade, and if you want to look sexy and seductive, try a deeper shade. Thanks so much for the question and good luck!

-- Contributed by: JohnayHi Sabrina,
It sound like you may be using a foundation/powder with too much coverage. Why not try a sheer moisturizer with a hint of foundation like some of the new Olay products? Another thing you can try is some of the bare mineral products out there.
If that's not possible, or while you are waiting to try some of those products, is is possible for you to use one or the other (foundation or powder) instead of both? That may help to cut down on the cakey effect. Thanks for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhi i wanna ask why every time i apply a lil of makeup my face and some powder on top of it, it would look cakey like it doesnt adsorb into my skin it just stays on top could u qive me some suggestions. thanks alot hope to hear from you asap
p.s i use bobbi brown's oil free foundation and mac's mineralize powder.
Hi Charlene,
What is the undertone of Sun Beige? Is it pinkish or yellowish in undertone? That may help you choose the right powder. Also, makeup artist Bobbi Brown says that most of us have a yellow undertone, so try picking the powder with the most yellow undertone. I hope this helps you choose the right shade!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI really like the Loreal Bare Naturale makeup. I didn't know what shade to use so I picked Sun Beige and I've been told that my makeup looks so nice. I think I need to use a powder over it because I need a little touch up every now and then (my nose gets a little shiny). I don't know what shade to use - I have seen 2 or 3 shades in the store but I'm not quite sure which one will suit me. Any suggestions?
-- Contributed by: CharleneHi Diana,
I'm so sorry to hear that, but thankfully there is help. Try Dermablend. They specialize in scars and discolorations and I think their products may be able to help, so that you can feel better about showing off your arms. Thanks so much for the question and good luck to you!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI am an Indian with light brown skin and I have discoloration on my arms. And Im unable to wear a sleeveless or show my bear arms because of this. I would like to know if you have a makeup to patch it up while Im in the sun or if you have any recommendations on the same.
-- Contributed by: DianaHi Cindy,
Try warm browns to bring out the red in your hair and try varying shades of blue for the eyes (couple that with a warm brown eyeliner pencil). Since we can't see you, the very best thing you can do is head to your local department store's makeup counter (like a Macy's) and ask one of the consultants there to help you. They'll be able to direct you to the right makeup colors in an instant. Thanks for the question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI have dark brown hair with red highlights, blue eyes, and fair skin with golden brown freckles. I would like to know the best color makeup (blush, eyeshadow, lipstick) to wear. Also what clothing colors should I be choosing? Thank you
-- Contributed by: CindyHi Suzanne,
It sounds like a beautiful dress! You have two choices in this instance: You can either go with brown eyeliner, a champagne or nutmeg base (eye shadow) and lots of mascara. Alternatively, you can reach for purples and violets for the eye shadow color. Either will look fantastic and classy (to match your dress). To stand out, I'd reach for the purple (it contrasts so beautifully with brown).
Almay has a terrific collection of eye shadows in both purple and brown. Visit the site, and you'll see that they also have a quiz that then picks the best makeup shades for you. Thanks for the question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajDear Dana,
I have reddish brown hair, brown eyes with medium skin tone. I am wearing a classy chocolate dress and wanted to know the best make up for my eyes and lips to compliment.
Thanks, Suzanne
-- Contributed by: SuzanneHi Olga,
If it's causing you such a big problem, then stay away from dark colors and eyeliners. Instead, I want you to choose lighter eye shadow colors, like gold, vanilla and pale pink and peach. This will get rid of the "I look like I'm crying look" and it will make your eyes look big and gorgeous. Also, because you have such beautiful long lashes, I want you to use an eyelash curler- this will really open up your eyes and make them stand out
When you do want to use a dark eyeliner or eye shadow- only apply it to the top lid. You can make the bottom of the eye stand out by using a white liner. This will make your eyes "pop" in the most gorgeous way. Thanks for the question and good luck to you!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhey dana!!!! first id like to mention that im not a native english speaker, but ill try to make myself understood. i have big eyes and really long eye lashes on the both sides of the eyes: the upper side and the lower side, thats why everytime i want to apply some colour under lower line of ma eye, i look as if ive cried. me eyes go a little bit low on the outer side of ma eyes and when i apply some dark colours they seem to go even lower. what should i do and use, to make my eyes seem beautiful and the makeup fit the shape of my eyes?? thank you!!
-- Contributed by: olgaHi Samantha,
We understand. If the circles are really severe, then maybe you should see a dermatologist- they may be able to help. As for concealor, the trick is to apply it carefully and then blend. Have you tried setting the concealor with powder? That may help it to stay in place, and may also help lighten the appearance of the circles.
With eyeliner, sometimes it's better to use a lighter color (like gold, or pink). If the eyeliner you are currently using is making your eyes looks small, then perhaps you are applying it too close to the eye? Try to apply it farther away (not right under the eye, but by the lashes).
If you are still having no luck, then switch from eye liner and instead, turn to eye shadows. For your beautiful hazel eyes, play with luminous shades of violet. It will look spectacular! Thanks for the question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI have dark circles under my eyes. I get plenty of sleep, and no matter how much cover up and concealer I put on, I still have those circles!!!!! I use my fingers to put on a light/pale wet concealer. But those rings!!! And they ruin whatever other make-up I have on my face, just because the dark rings look awful!!!!! Plus, I don't know how to apply eyeliner and shadow to make my eyes look pretty. Especially eye liner!!!!! Whenever I try to put it on, it makes my eyes look small and gives my face an old look to it. I have light brown/hazel eyes, and light tan skin. Please let me know what shades of eye shadow, and how to use eye liner and concealer. Any advice you could give me will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!!! Thanks! Samantha
-- Contributed by: SamanthaHello, I was wondering if you could maybe help me... my eyes are kind of small, or at least I think they are, and they are blue. Do you know how I can make them bigger and bluer, and stand out? I also have dirty blonde hair and my skin is pale right now, but during the summer I get tan. If you could help me, I would really appreciate it! Thank you!
-- Contributed by: jackyHi Shelby,
Your hair sounds beautiful, but what color are you trying to bring out- the brown shades, or the blond shades? Depending on what you think could go best with your skin tone, search for the right hair color. If necessary, contact Clairol or any other hair color company (they often have consultants that will help you find the perfect shade for free).
As for the style, what would you like to accomplish? Do you want more body (then add curls); do you want it sleek and straight (then try a flat iron)? Or do you want both (in which case you could try giving yourself bangs).
Please feel free to post here again explaining yourself further, and we'll get back to you. Thank You!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhi my name is shelby and i have strawberry blonde to a light brown hair color and i dont no what i could do to bring out the color or what type of hair cut i should get my hair is about to my shoulders and is very thin what should i do?
-- Contributed by: shelbyHi Amisha,
The best way to keep your look fresh is to mix it up a bit. You mentioned that you have light brown eyes. Have you tried using a purple or a hunter green eyeshadow/eyeliner? Another great trick that you can definitely pull off because you're a teen is glitter pencils (try Tarte makeup line). If you feel a little shy at first, use your regular eye makeup look and just apply a little bit of the glitter pencil to the inner corners of your eyes. You'll be looking fresh and current in no time! Thanks for the question and good luck to you!

thanks a bunch jennifer
-- Contributed by: jenniferHi Jesse,
I re-read the advice Dana had given you, and I must say I agree with her one hundred percent. With your coloring, blue would have a garish effect. Please try to incorporate some warm shades into your wardrobe and makeup; you'd really look amazing doing that. Thanks for the comment!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajDear Dana,
I talked to you before. The one with the strawberry blonde hair, you told me to stay with the warm colors like terracotta, gold and caramel. I was just wondering, i wear a lot of blue because thats what my mom buys for me, what would that make me "seem like" i guess. I don't really have the warm colors, though i like them and the idea they do look good on me i guess i could say. Sorry if i bothered you again. Thanks bunches again. Jesse
-- Contributed by: JesseHi Michele,
It depends on what kind of look you're going for. Personally, I recommend "fierce". This is where you apply the liner as close as possible to the lash line. In my experience, when you do it lower (under the lashes), it kind of gives a "baby" expression- which is not always attractive. We really hope this helps and good luck to you!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhi. the area under my lashes is rather wide. should i apply liner there, or, should i apply it over the lashes and then smudge it

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajMy son is getting married in a week. I am wearing a deep purple dress. It is a blue-purple not a red-purple. My eyes are dark blue, hair color -light brown with heavy blonde highlights and my skintone is light/medium. This is an evening wedding. I don't want to look washed out for pictures and my makeup needs to stay put all night. What color lipstick should I wear that will compliment my skin, dress, etc. but show up for pictures. Also what color(s) blush and eyeshadow do you recommend. Thank you so much.

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI'm Chinese with yellow undertone, light to medium skintone. I want to know what blush color will suit me best. I'm considering Laura Mercier Illuminating Quad but I don't know which of the two shades (Pink Rose and coral red) should I get. I'm also quite confused because I think I have warm undertone but how come in terms of clothes, I look good in bright colors like fuchsia, aqua as opposed to old rose, navy... I've also never look good in earth tones.

-- Contributed by: KrisHi Mary Beth,
Usually the experts only help at local department stores, and those are for the higher priced makeup items (think MAC Cosmetics, Iman Cosmetics and Urban Decay.
If you want an expert to do your face, it's no problem! Just visit your local department store, visit the makeup counter and ask for a makeover. They'll be able to do your face and give you tips on what works best on you. The best part? You don't even have to purchase anything!
We hope this helps, and good luck to you!

-- Contributed by: Debbie VasenDear Dana, I am a make up artist/beginner/ from Moldova - a far away and small country, and I need you advise: I like very much the book of Robet Jones " Makeup Makeovers" and as I want to implement his techniques in my work, I am trying to find some alike eye shadow colors on local Market, but we don't have a big choice on that, only Mary Kay, Isadora, Bourjois and proffetional Peggy Sage (from the make up school) - Please suggest me a company that has the at least alike colors/if not the same/ that Robet Jones uses. Thank you very much!
