I am 18 years old and I am a senior at my highschool currently working towards getting my diploma and getting out of here! I live in Pittsburgh, PA and my goal is to go out to Los Angeles, CA and become a professional makeup/prosthetics artist for cinema, print and fashion. I've been researching both the Joe Blasco Makeup Center West, as well as the Westmore Academy. I don't want to focus on hair or nails, I want to be a makeup specialist! Makeup is truly my passion and I am ready to live in a box, poor, in LA to reach my goal. I do have a few questions though as to where to begin and which moves to make... 1) Is it necessary to go to cosmetology school and get a license in PA to work as a makeup artist in CA? 2) Which school would you recommend: Joe Blasco, or Westmore? 3) I've already began to build a portfolio- what would be the best way to display it? A website? Other suggestions?

Hi Kendra,

First, we are so proud of you for going back to school- we know that's not easy! Second, try to look on the bright side of things- you do have your Masters now and not a lot of people can say that.

Next, start thinking outside the box. Maybe visit a department store in your area, explain to them your skill set (mention your education!) and see if they'd be willing to take you on in their makeup department. With the right attitude and a little determination, you never know what can happen! We'll be rooting for you and wishing you lots of luck!
