Hi Stacie,

Don't worry! It takes everybody time to learn how to apply makeup correctly. The trick is to go slow, gradually build up color (no matter which part of the face you are working with) and to check the makeup in natural light (to make sure that there are no streaks or garish effects). We wish you the best of luck and if you ever have a question, please feel free to write us back! Thanks for sharing with us!

i hardley ever wear makeup. sometimes i'll wear it for a couple days to a week every now and then, but i was never really taught exactly what to do and how to do it. don't get me wrong, i read the backs of the makeup packages and just got in a groove. after reading this, and other tips on articles, i learned quite a lot. so i can't wait to practice, and then go to work and see how it goes....I'm a waitress...lol. thanks!!!

Hi Sam,

It totally depends on the variances of your skin. It depends on which product your skin responds best to and can tolerate. Why not try a test and use one product one week and another the next? This way you'll know what your skin responds best to.

Hi Jesse,

Don't worry about your story being long- life is complicated and it usually takes more than a few words to explain it!

Okay, if your Mom is convinced that brand names are the only way to go, then head to Bobbi Brown. She'll be able to find:

  • Foundation between $30.00 and $40.00
  • Lipsticks for $20.00
  • Blush for $22.00

They also have terrific coverups to help with her spots.

Now, the real trick in looking young is combination of the materials in the product and the actual application of the product. Ask your Mom to read Eye Makeup to Make Eyes Look Younger. This can help her begin her journey to applying makeup differently so that she looks young and youthful.

When it comes to covering up spots, she'll need to invest in a coverup that is substantial- that's why I think she should head to Bobbi Brown-they have terrific shades (in varying tones) to do just that. Also, she can purchase Bobbi Brown in a department store (if she prefers that method).

On a more personal note, it's really great of you to try and help her- that's terrific! Feel free to write back if you have another question. Thanks and good luck!

Dear Jacqueline,
First of all, I just have to tell you that I've read many of LoveToKnow articles and I'm more knowledgeable about things I never knew because of you and the rest of the writers for LoveToKnow! Thank You!!!
So I've been having this issue with my mother lately. She just got this new waitressing job and she told me she needs to look young.
So one day while she was getting ready for work, I went into her room while she was applying blush. I observed the blush she was using and it looked a bit old to me. There was something about the blush that seemed old. Therefore, I asked my mom when she bought the blush and when she opened it and she said approximately 10 years ago! I automatically told her that she needed to throw it away because makeup lasts up to 3-6 months after opening. (I think). I told her about the bacterial build-up and other gross things to convince her to throw it away. (Since my mom loves to learn things about germs)She told me that the eye-shadow she already put on was opened 10 years ago, too.
I basically just freaked out on her!!! She told me she would love to throw it the blush and eye shadow away, but she has to cover up these dark spots on her face to look real young! I offered to go to CVS with her to buy new make-up, but she told me that she wanted to look young and natural and wants to use “brand-names”. I told her that CVS has brand-names, too; but she said those aren’t brand-names, Estee Laudere (or something) is! I mean CVS has more teen brands like Maybelline, Loreal, Covergirl and others, but she wants those expensive make-ups that does the exact same as the brands in CVS! (right?)
I was baffled to what to say to that! What better way to help her than to ask an expert? So I was just wondering how I would find her natural shades for just about anything (or maybe just blush and eye-shadow). She is an Asian, early forties woman who has dark spots she wants to cover up.
I’m SO sorry if this is too long! I just feel so helpless for my mom and her face (probably being infected with those 10 year old germs!)

Love, Jess

Thanks !!! But if i were to have a stubborn pimple, which would you reccommend to use instead- astringent or toner?

-- Contributed by: Sam

Why do you need both Sam? Decide between the toner and the astringent. I think you should choose (or use) just one to begin with. You don't want to use too many products on your face.

Also, neither product should "burn"; it should feel cooling- as if you splashed cool water on your face and stood in front of a fan. Like that.

So, to recap,

  • Wash face
  • Apply toner
  • And then, if applicable, move on to makeup

Is it a little clearer now? Let us know.

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautaj

So after i wash my face, i should use toner, then use astringent?
Also, i heard that some astringents comes in for sensitive skin. So i tried using my astringent & on one day, it burned on the areas i applied it on & on another day, it didn't burn at all. So does that mean i need the sensitive one?
Doesn't the burn mean it's working, though?

Hi Sam,

Toners are milder than astringents (astringents tend to have more alcohol, so they're harsher to the skin) and you should use the toner after you cleanse to remove any leftover traces of makeup.

I hope this helps to clear up the confusion a bit! Thanks for the post!

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautaj

Hey, i have a question about the difference between astringent & toner.
I heard that there was an astringent toner. What is that? the combination of both?
i heard that there is an ingredient that every astringent or toner needs, i htink it's witch hazel or something
i bought both astringent & toner, but i still didn't use them because i dont know which one to use first.

sorry! this comment has too many questions!

Hi Sam,

You are very much welcome- just leave a question again if you have more in the future. Thanks for the kind words!

Thank You SOO much! ! You don't know how much of a guru you are to me !

-- Contributed by: Sam

Hi Sam,

No problem- we're here to answer questions!

Okay, first, stick with your usual face cleansing routine. It sounds good and since it's been keeping acne at bay, you probably should keep it up. For makeup, there is really only one rule: Foundation and Concealor go on first. Now, you don't need to use both- only what you need for coverage. So, if all you need is concealor to cover up some blemishes, then go with that- remember, less is always more. If you are going to use both, put foundation on before the concealor. Sometimes the foundation is all that's needed. Now it's time for eye makeup. If you are using both eyeliner and eye shadow, put eyeliner on first and then the eye shadow. Finish with lipstick and/or mascara.

Now, remember, it you don't need to use all the makeup products out there-only use what is needed to make you look beautiful (that could be as simple as concealor, mascara and lipstick).

Thanks for the question and I hope this helps!

Hey Jacqueline ! I've asked many questions around here in the makeup section & the biggest question i've always forgotten is what is the order of applying makeup? my daily routine in the bathroom is to brush my teeth, wash my face with those daily washes & pimple controls, then dab on some astringent, then dab on some salicylic acid based acne control treatment & then mousturizer. it may seem like i have a face full of pimples, but i don't, but i'm too scared to let them go, in case overnight i do acquire pimples! so i've been thinking about adding more makeup to my daily routine & i don't know which one goes before one & i'm scared that some makeups makes me break out. so i might be adding more acne control to my daily routine & im scared that might mess up my face.. if that's possible.. so my biggest question is which makeup goes first & the next & others.. help?

heya my names briana im 12 going to middle school and i was wondering the best ways to cover up my pimples i have alot on the sides of my cheeks. and i dont know how i should cover them. also i dont know which colors to use on my cheeks like i mean which shades of blush. can you help me???

-- Contributed by: briana younce

Hi Briana! The first thing you should do is survey the problem. This will give you a good idea of how much cover you'll need. Next, you'll need three tools:

When dealing with concealer, you'll want to find one that is slightly lighter than your skin tone. Some people apply concealer with a brush while others prefer their fingers. Then it's time for your foundation, and finally, the pressed powder to set the look and for quick touchups.

Also, consider going to your local department store. Head to one of the makeup counters and see if one of the salespeople can help you.

And, when all else fails, remember that nothing looks more attractive than a genuine smile. In addition, if you haven't already, take a look at the following articles- they may be able to help:

Good luck with school and have a great year- you'll look great!
