-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi (: I was just wondering if you could give me tips for my formal. I am wearing a strapless dress with the chest bit black and the rest of the dress is a deep bright blue colour and is flowing. Can you give me some tips for my make up and hair please?! I have tanned skin, dark brown eyes and i'm asian. Thank you
-- Contributed by: JessThat sounds like a great look and a great dress Julianne!
Okay, since you want a glow, then I'd suggest a bronze-y looking blush (or actual bronzer) for your cheeks (and a touch to your forehead, nose and chin). Along with that, go with a lip gloss and metallic golden eyes.
Bobbi Brown has a great collection of shades to choose from (but you can find similar products at the drugstore). Try:
- Blush in blushed rose
- Illuminating Bronzer - it's got a sheen to it that will make you sparkle, but not be too "sparkly"
- Chrome Eye Shadow - this will really bring out the warmth in your coloring.
Finish off your glowing look by using a lip crayon and top it off with lip gloss.
If you can't purchase the products I listed, no worries, just rummage through your makeup bag to see what you've got or visit your local drugstore- you're going to look great! Keep us posted on how the look turns out and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajMy dress is a strapless cream white dress. I think i want to play up my eyes in this dress. I want a natural kind of golden glow in this dress. Do you think that will suit? If so, how can i achieve this kind of look? Thanks
-- Contributed by: JulianneHi Julianne,
Will your shoulders be showing with this dress? Or is your top covered up? Often, when the shoulders are showing people choose wear their hair up because it helps your neck to look longer.
As for the makeup, it depends on the kind of look you are going for. You can always use:
- An overall eye shadow color of taupe (or some other light shade).
- Brown eyeliner- but don't line all the way to the corners of your eyes; instead, take a sliver colored eyeliner and place that color in the corner of your eyes- it will give you an ice princess kind of look that can be quite flattering.
That said, what kind of look are you going for, and what feature do you want to play up- eyes, or lips? Please write back and tell me what look (sex kitten, dreamy, etc) you want to give off and I'll try to give you some more tips.
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajThanks again for your tips (: I have another question to ask. What make up and how should i do my hair to wear for a short creamy white dress? - olive skin, dark hair, brown eyes. This is for another formal haha
-- Contributed by: JulianneHi Julianne,
Thanks so much for the kind words. Okay, your coloring sounds amazing- you'd look great in a deep smoky purple or blue eye look, but don't forget to keep your lips neutral. If you need more tips (specific ones), please feel free to write us back. If not, have a great time at the formal!

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Dana,
What kind of look would you recommend for a professional day look for the eyes. I have an indian dusky complexion with dark brown eyes. I used to line with black pencil and I am finding it too harsh for a look. Can you suggest 2 options? One, a complete look with shadow and liner and one quick look with only liner?
Thanks!
-- Contributed by: IndianHi Mary,
Please leave your question for Dana here Ask the Makeup Expert. Thanks very much for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Dana,
I'm 16 and I have big (but not prominent) brown eyes. I've tried to put black, brown and dark purple eyeliner on my lower lashline and it doesn't seem to work because it looks overdone. I was wondering if maybe I should use another colour, or should I only put eyeliner on my upper crease?
-- Contributed by: MaryHi Aurelia,
Since you are tan, I think that using a combination of gold and brown would work really nice. To do this, purchase a glittery gold pencil and a brown one. Line your eyes with the brown eyeliner, but don't line the inner corners of your eyes (the part that is closest to your nose).
Instead, in this part, put the gold eyeliner. This will give you a "fierce" look, without looking silly.
Next, typically blue and purple look pretty good on brown eyes, but you'll have to experiment to find a shade that stands up against your skin color. I do think though, that you should try these colors, as they should look pretty good. Thank you for the question and please feel free to write back!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHello, my name is Aurelia and I'm 13. My mother is Chinese and my father's Filipino. So I have Chinese/Japanese attributes, but am tan. My eye's aren't exactly the typical "Asian eyes" so all the tips for Asian eyes that I read are pretty useless. Could you tell me how to apply eyeliner and eyeshadow while staying away from the "panda eyes" look? My eye color is nearly black, but they are indeed brown. I don't even know what color eyeshadow would suit me.
-- Contributed by: AureliaHi Alexis,
You won't be able to make your eyes look "lighter", but you can make them stand out with the right eyeshadow/eyeliner.
First, decide how much makeup you want to wear. Putting on both eyeshadow and eyeliner can be a bit time consuming, and since you are young, you can definitely get away with wearing eyeliner alone (wearing eyeliner alone, on older folks, tends to make the eyes look tired).
Okay, the first thing you need to know are the shades that look best on you. For brown eyes, that's usually purple, champagne, sometimes green, and sometimes blue. Eyeliners in these shades will take your brown eyes stand out brilliantly!
However, stay away from black (use black/brown, or just brown instead) because black can also give that "tired" looking appearance.
If you have any more questions, please feel free to write us back!

Hi Clair,
I can understand where you are coming from. The trick is for you to use some bluh, or something that will make your skin glow.
Try this, no matter what color eyeliner/shadow you are using, try putting a little blush on your cheeks. Do pink shades look good on you? For example, what do you look like with a rose/pink lipstick? If this lipstick looks good on you, try pairing it with a rosey cheek as well.
This slideshow may help. Please write back to give us a little more information- we'd love to help!

-- Contributed by: clairHi Cara,
Have you tried gold eye liner? This shade will dramatically bring out your eyes and make them truly standout. You can purchase here:
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHey, i have hazel eyes, and like to smoke my eyes out hoping this will get them noticed more. But i'm not sure if its the right thing for my eye colour, i usually like wearing black eyeliner, with a glitterly grey eyeshadow and thick mascara. Would there be a better colour for the 'emo' style to wear with my Hazel eyes? there are usually mistaken for Brown and i want to bring out the green in them
Thanks x
-- Contributed by: CaraHi Hannah,
Great question! Here's what I want you to do. Since "dark" or "strong" makeup isn't blending with you all that well, why not try something light instead? Do this buy using a sandy, shimmer gold (it may work really welll with your brown eyes, and blond locks).
You can also use clear mascara to top things off. First, place a champagne or bone colored shadow on your lid.
Then take the shimmer shade and apply it only to the inner corners of your eye (the part closest to your nose). This should look fantastic on you. You can also try other shimmer shades like, pink, depending on what looks better on you.
Here's where to buy the items I mentioned:
I also want you to keep in mind the whole "lighter concept". So, in other words, skip the heavy stuff, and reach for shadows and liners that give off a slight glimmer. Thanks for the question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Nicole,
Yours is a very common question. Many girls who are 11 would love to wear makeup, but their family says no. First, you should respect your family's wishes- you'll have plenty of time to wear makeup once you get a bit older. Second, you can ask them is you can wear lip gloss since it usually contains no color. You can also ask them is you can wear clear mascara (again, there's no color). Another thing to ask is if you can tweeze your eyebrows a little bit. They'll probably be okay with these tips because it won't make you look older, but it will make you happy. Ask them and see what they say. You can also just ask for one item, see how it goes, and then hit them up in a little bit to do more!
Here's where you can buy clear mascara:
Thanks for the question and good luck!

-- Contributed by: MelissaHi Farrah,
That is fantastic news! I'm so happy that the eye makeup tip worked and that the glitter stayed on. Glitter is so tricky, so I'm not surprised it took several tries to get it right- thank goodness you stuck with it.
Thanks for writing us back and letting us know how the day went- feel free to ask another question anytime!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Jacqueline... The wedding was great and so was the glittery eye make up i did. Thanks for the vaseline tip, it took a little while for me to get it right but after my 7th time, it worked well. I tried 2 ways of applying the glitter, the first one was by the vaseline method, the second one was by applying wet eye shadow and dusting some glitter on. While this method did work, it didnt stay on as long as the vaseline one. But i did get many compliments on my glittery eyes. Thanks for saving the day. Will ask you for more advice when i run into more make up woes!
Hi Farrah,
This is a tricky one. You'll need to practice a lot before the big day to make sure you get it right.
Well, it seems that there are a lot of ways to apply glitter, but one that caught my eye was putting a little bit of Vaseline where you want to glitter to go.
So, follow the usual steps you use the apply makeup/eye makeup. From there, dip a Q-tip into a jar of Vaseline and apply it to where (on the eye) you want the glitter to go.
From there, take another Q-tip, dip it in the loose glitter pot, and then apply it to where the Vaseline was. This should help hold it in place.
Write back and let us know if it works, and have a great time at the wedding!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Jacqueline... Thank U so much for the tips on 'smoky eyes' It didnt smudge like before. But i need help on one more thing. I am going to attend a wedding and have been give loose glitter to apply on to my eyes. to practice,I first applied concealer, loose powder, eyeshadow and then some gliter. However after sometime all the glitter seemed to have fallen off. Is there a correct way of applying the glitter and getting it to stay the whole night?
Thanks : )

-- Contributed by: PezelyHi Tara,
Your eyes sound beautiful! For a natural look, prep your lids with a natural shade of eye shadow, like champagne, taupe or nutmeg.
From there, apply a brown eyeliner and top everything off with a clear mascara. You can find one at Walgreens. This makeup should look very natural and stunning.
Lastly, don't forget about the brows- keep them neat and groomed. Thanks for the question and good luck!

-- Contributed by: FarrahHi Aya,
Why not try sheer eyeshadow shades in green, blue and purple? I have a feeling they will look simply stunning on your color eyes. To find out more, try Mac's website here:
Thanks for the question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI have really dark brown, almost black, eyes with a tanned olive complexion. Moreover, I'm Asian so applying eyeshadow can be a pain when you can't really see my crease. I was wondering what type(s) of color eyeshadow could really make my eyes pop, stand out, and/or look alive without looking too made up or flake-y. (Light tones make me look flake-y)
-- Contributed by: AyaHi Dee,
This is a common complaint. Here's what you need to do: Use a lighter shade/color on the inner corner of your eyes (the part that is most near your nose), and then use the darker shades farther away.
For example, let's say you are using shades of brown eye shadow. Use a pale champagne color near your nose, and then use the darker colors as usual- but don't put the darker shades near the inner corners. If you are using eyeliners, use colors like a brown eyeliner and a gold eyeliner. Line the eye in brown (leave the part near your nose empty), then go back and use the gold color in the empty spot. This technique will help tremendously.
Another thing you can do is to always use a "highlighter" shade on the top part of your eye (the part near your eyebrow). This too will "open" the eye".
We hope this helps and if you have more questions, please feel free to leave them!
i have dark brown hair and an olive complexion, my eyes are light brown but are quite small and everytime i try to put eyeshadow on i just look like ive got black eyes!

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhi my dear my question is that i have a meduim dark brown eyes .. and how i can put make up for my eyes ... and contact lenses which colr ican use .. my skin is a bit dark not so much.. thank you regards
-- Contributed by: NataliaHi Belle,
The first thing you should do is use a light color on the upper part of your eyes (all the way to the brow bone). This will give the eyes a wider appearance. Choose a light shade like champagne, bone or a similar color.
From there, curl your lashes with an eyelash curler, and then apply mascara. If you like using eyeliner, consider using a light color on the inner crease of your eye (the part closest to your nose) in a shade of gold, pink, blue, or silver (the color depends on what works best with your skin tone). Also, it would be great if the eyeliner has a little sparkle to it, as it will catch the light and look fantastic. Thank you for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHello there! I am Asian with brown eyes and I was just wondering how to bring out the most of Asian eyes and to make it appear to be bigger.
-- Contributed by: BelleHi Driima,
Please see the advice I gave to Janelle- it will work for your eye color too. Thank you for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Janelle,
For dark brown eyes, you'll want to work with:
- Purples
- Black
- Brown
- Sometimes blue (try it and see how it matches with your skin tone).
- Sometimes green (same advice as above).
Don't forget to apply a base eye shadow (this will let your eyes pop). Try champagne, bone or similar colors. Thanks for the question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajhey i'm latina and medium skin wit dar brown eyes. i was wondering what eye makeup would look best with my tone of eyes.
thanks =] Janelle
-- Contributed by: JanelleI am indian and im'm 14 yrs old i go to hs and i have dark brown eyes what eyeliner style and eye shadow should i use also colors that would go with my tan skin.
-- Contributed by: driimaHi Kinny,
First, you'll need an overall base color for the entire lid and a contour color (it's not necessary to have three colors). For a base color, try nutmeg, or taupe. Contour colors can be sable brown, plummy purples, or even turquoise (depending on your look and how bold you'd like to go).
Try Bobbi Brown. She has some great, long wearing shades of eye shadows.
The next thing I'd like you to consider is investing in a gold or silver (depending on which looks great on your overall appearance) eye liner. This will allow your eyes to pop.
Lastly, don't be afraid to use a base color eye shadow that appears "light". Take a look at some of the old photos of Naomi Campbell. Even though this is article is about fragrance, I want you to take a look at it anyway because it has two great photos of Naomi, and as usual, she looks great:
We hope this helped and we wish you the best of luck! Feel free to post another question if need be as well.
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI am a dark skinned african american, what color eye shadow should I use? please help!!
-- Contributed by: KinnyHi Kate, Why don't you reach for a deep purple shade of eye shadow and/or liner? Nothing will make your eyes stand out quicker than that.
Also, depending on your skin tone, try a deep green shadow as well. Thanks for the question and good luck!

I'm 16 and have big dark brown eyes, i want to make my eyes stand up but look natural and i also have yellow undertones.
-- Contributed by: divaHi Dana,
Since your eyes are small, you don't want to draw black eyeliner too close to the lash line. That will just make them look smaller. Try this instead, start using a light eye shadow all over the lid (like bone or champagne), then follow up with an eggplant/purple eyeliner.
You can also use light colored eyeliners like silver or gold (depending on which best matches your skin tone) and place it only on the insides of the eyes (the part closest to the nose). This should really help your eyes pop. Thanks for the comment and if you have another question, please feel free to post it!

-- Contributed by: danaHi Tamara,
Have you tried a glittery turquoise shade? Victoria's Secret has a great eyeliner in that color on their website (in the makeup section).
Beyond that, try to use lighter shades and use eye shadows like bone and champagne. For a little extra kick try a gold or silver eyeliner. Not only will your eyes sparkle beautifully, but they'll also look bigger. Thanks for the question and good luck to you!

-- Contributed by: tamaraHi Sandi,
Make dark brown eyes "pop" by using purple or blue. This can be either with an eyeliner or with eyeshadows; these colors are great at getting brown eyes to look fantastic!
I don't recommend you use brown eye shadow with brown eyeliner- it will look too monochrome. If you like using brown eyeliner, try pairing it will a shade of eyeshadow (sweep the eyeshadow over the entire eyelid) in bone, banana or champagne. You want to pick a base eyeshadow that will slightly brighten and even out your skin tone. From there, pick a darker contour color (this could be sable brown, purple etc). Pair this with the brown eyeliner if you are going for a smokey eye look. Thanks for the question and good luck!

For your brown eyes and medium complexion, why don't you try honey colored hues for your hair (to bring out the warmth in your skin tone?). Think about highlighted for shades of caramel or red, but don't go too light because it can look unnatural and/or ruin your hair. Follow all of the directions on the box for the best look.
For your makeup, you could really try any number of looks. For lips, think about pink/berry tones (to find the most looking lipstick, pick a shade that is close to the undertone of your lips). For eyes, try shades of plum, gold, light pink, or even an intense blue. With your coloring, you should be able to pull it off. Thanks for the question!

Parties' are always so exciting! Since you can wear jeans, I suggest you do (they always look sexy and can be dressed up or down). Pair them with a great pair of sandals and a dressy top (maybe something off the shoulder?).
As for your makeup, please see our Extreme Eye Makeup article- it has some great pictures and some great tips for playing up your eyes. Since you have lush, long, lashes, play them up by curling them with an eyelash curler and then adding mascara. One of the best things you can do for a party is to play up the eyes, so think about placing gold or silver eyeliner only in the corner of your eyes (the area closest to the nose). It will look fierce and fabulous! Also, remember to only highlight one area of the face at a time, so choose between your eyes and your lips (whichever one is your best feature) and play that up. Have fun at the party!

While Dana is no longer writing on this particular page, we strongly encourage you to visit Smoky Eye Makeup and Creating Smoky Eye Makeup. Both of these articles are chock full of information you need to create this particular eye look. Thank You!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi Samira,
With smaller eyes, you'll want to use lighter colors. This will "open" up the eye. Try champagne or a light gold over the entire lid. Then follow up with a deeper color like a deep green. Finish off with a little bit of brown eyeliner, but don't place the eyeliner close to the eye (that does make the eye seem smaller).
Basically, what you want to do is opt for light to medium colors. Good luck, and thanks for the post!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi, i have small brown eyes, which makes it impossible for me to wear black eyeliner because my eyes look even more smaller. White liner really does do a great job of making eyes look spectacular. For your eye color, try deep purple, green or blue. All of the colors will make you stand out from the crowd and look great! Thanks for your question!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi, my name is Thuy. I am Asian and i just started to make up, I dont do make up a lot. I just want to use mostly eyeliner to make my eyes look better, and lip gloss. I have big round eyes and dark eyebrowns. My eyes are dark brown/black. I tried only white eyeliner and i loved it..I wonder what color of eyeliner should i get? I consider a lot about white eyeliner and Brown eyeliner? will it be good? Also, my skin is light.

-- Contributed by: aNnEHi Sara,
That's a great question! First, check out the following articles:
Next, start looking at eyeliners. A purple eyeliner will have more staying power and pack a bigger beauty punch that purple eyeshadow. Also take a look at blue eyeliners (try Cover Girl or [[Revlon Eyeliner Review | Revlon- both are great and affordable!).
Also, remember that when you're playing up your eyes, you want to keep the rest of your face pretty simple- so skip any strong lipsticks, blush, etc. Instead, try a nice lip gloss, or a soft pink color for the lips. And one last note, check out Eye Makeup Tips for some helpful hints, and then go to Eye Makeup Pictures and Glamour Images for some pictures to inspire you. Good luck, and have a great senior year!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi I am 17 and I am in my Senior year of high school I would like to learn eye makeup tips. Do you have any that I could use? I tried purple eye shadow and it doesn't look bad but since I am the only person in my family that wants to do makeup I need is help.

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajHi, I'm 16 (with brown eyes!) and I am pretty new to makeup. At most, I will occasionally wear some black eyeliner. Could you give me some tips for using eyeliner/eye shadow? Thanks!
-- Contributed by: newbieHi Brown Eyes,
Since you feel like your eyes look too large when you wear eyeliner, have you tried drawing the line very close to your upper and lower lashes? It's a look that fashion industry insiders call "fierce" (it also looks pretty great!). Lining your eyes in this manner makes the eyes appear slightly smaller.
What you can also do is try using black eyeliner (it also tends to make the eyes look smaller, but still nice). In fact, stay away from any of the light colors (like bone, or champagne etc.) since they tend to "open up" the eye. Choose darker hues, like green, black and purple to get the look you're after.
Good luck to you, and we hope this helps!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline Dautajim 14 and have brown eyes i love eyeliner but i think it makes my eyes look bigger than what they are. i still want to wear eyeliner, but i want them to look nice, you know...
-- Contributed by: brown*eyesHi Brown Eyes!
First I don't think your eyes are a disaster! Second, try a glittery gold pencil or a glittery silver pencil. Here's what you do: take your standard black or brown eyeliner pencil and rim the top and bottom of your eyes. Then, take the glittery gold pencil (try MAC or Bobbi Brown to purchase the pencil) and place it in the "v" corner of your eyes (the part of your eyes closest to your nose).
This trick will definitely make your eyes "pop"! The glittery gold will also go beautifully with your skin and still stand out. The greatest part is that you can combine the gold pencil with any of your other pencil shades (the greens, the plums, etc.).
Thanks for your question and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI'm 15 years old and i have small shimmery dark brown eyes, but i don't know how to bring the color of them out! I tried black, green, plum, and blue but it just doesn't contrast with my dark skin!
-- Contributed by: BrowneyesdisasterHi Gela,
We'll assume that your eyes are brown (since you posted your comment/question here!). If so, try liners/ shadows that are brown, gold, purple or dark green. That ought to help them really pop!
Good luck and thanks for your comment!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI need help with making my eyes stand out more....
-- Contributed by: gelaHi Mariksa!
Try purple, gold or deep brown eyeliners. To give your eyes even more pop, place a shimmery gold, silver or pink eyeliner only in the corner of your eyes. That will makeup your eyes pop no matter what you happen to be wearing.
Hope this helps and good luck!
-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI have brown eyes and i would like a teqnique that would bring out my eye color and fast for every day make up.
-- Contributed by: MariksaI have brown eyes and find that dark plum shadows work well for the smokey/evening look. Fern green looked nice too.
