Wearable Purples for Fall

by Tanya on November 03, 2009

One of the many things I love about fall is its affiliation with dramatic colors. This season, the tendency is toward vibrant shades that remain true to fall’s traditionally rich hues will incorporating something a bit brighter and unexpected to the mix. While purple has always been an autumnal favorite, this year’s variation is completely multitudinous: Some are inherently regal while others boast a more rock star-chic aesthetic.

When it comes to makeup, purple can be a little tricky. It’s not as goof-proof as throwing on a plum-colored top, and it can be daunting to those who tend to shy away from color in general. Even if your tastes are more of the neutral variety, though, you can update your look with a touch of purple and look natural, not garish. The same goes for anyone who isn’t experienced with this highly noticeable hue. Here are some tips to make the most of purple this season:

  • Bright purple eyelids may not be office appropriate, but you can easily sport a sheer lavender lip gloss anytime, anywhere for a look that’s soft and innocent. Try Laura Mercier Lip Glace in Lilac ($22, lauramercier.com) or Korres Cherry Full Color Gloss in Plum ($16, korresusa.com).
  • Whether you’re in party mode or just experimenting a bit, you can do a lot with an intense purple eye shadow. Check out our purple smoky eye technique for ideas. Try Illamasqua Powder Eye Shadow in Fatal ($20, sephora.com).
  • Purple blush? Oh, yes – but not quite as garish as what you might be imagining. A creamy cheek stain in a wearable plum shade is a great choice for brightening up your complexion and getting some leverage out of the purple trend, too. Remember to blend, blend, blend! Try tarte cosmetics Natural Cheek Stain in Blushing Bride ($30, tartecosmetics.com).
