Who Invented Lip Gloss
From LoveToKnow Makeup
If you’re wondering who invented lip gloss, you’ll find that a major American cosmetic manufacturer played a role in the birth of this slick and shiny cosmetic staple.
The Facts About Who Invented Lip Gloss
In 1932, the cosmetic house Max Factor invented the first commercially available lip gloss, known as X-Rated. With subtle sheen and shine, the X-Rated lip gloss provided women allover the country with a clear and lightweight alternative to lipstick with a sexy and wet glow.
It’s no wonder why Max Factor cosmetics are usually remembered and associated with the world of movie cosmetics and the platinum starlets of Hollywood. With a knack for creating camera ready faces, Max Factor coined the phrase "make up", as in, to make up a woman’s face.
Famous for the many looks that he branded in Hollywood, Max Factor rocked the beauty industry with a cult celebrity following, and a public consumer base that trusted both his knowledge and talent for beautifying women on both the big screen and in the real world.
Lip gloss is certainly not the only cosmetic invention that Max Factor created. In addition to this phenomenal little tube of shine, Max Factor is credited for formulating the first camera worthy makeup in 1912, the original pan cake makeup in the 1930’s and the first under eye concealer stick in 1954. In addition to these remarkable concealing and transforming products, women also owe waterproof cosmetic coverage to this innovative cosmetic name.
Benefits of Lip Gloss
Most women wear lip gloss to add shine and sheen to their lips without the commitment and maintenance of color. Although there are many colored lip glosses available on the market, the original formula created by Max Factor in 1932 was colorless and intended to mimic the sexiness of a wet and shiny pout. With on screen film cosmetic demands and application woes, lip gloss helped Max Factor add the shine necessary shine to create an attention grabbing pout without layering color endlessly.
Although lip gloss can often feel sticky and waxy, there are many brands on the cosmetic market that add shine without weighing down the consistency of lipstick. Women seeking quick and easy application, fail proof results and a sexy shine, may consider lip gloss as an everyday staple in their makeup routine.
Unlike lipstick, lip gloss creates a casual and relaxed palette that is perfect on those days that a little bit of shine is in order. With the addition of sun blocking SPF’s, many lip glosses also protect the sensitive lip area while imparting a gorgeous and slick glow.
X-Rated Lip Gloss
Who invented lip gloss and why may not be the most sought after question in the cosmetic world, but once a gal learns the roots of a trusty cosmetic product, it often pays to get nostalgic and track down the original formula. To many customer’s dismay, in 1991, Procter and Gamble purchased the Max Factor line of cosmetics and ceased production of their famous X-Rated lip gloss in 2003.
For those on a quest to find this original cosmetic product, it may pay to seek out auction sites such as eBay or popular Internet based cosmetic sites that specialize in discontinued merchandise. Rest assured Max Factor still creates fabulous lip glosses with the same shine and supple texture that the original is known for. With just a touch of sparkle and a tad bit of shine, even an au natural day can be a little glossier..

-- Contributed by: Jacqueline DautajI am a clear lip gloss addict. Have been for 15 years +. ( I am 51 yrs. old) It is funny to my friends- not so funny to my boyfriend. When I say I am almost out of "gloss"...HE KNOWS... I NEED GLOSS. I reapply it many times per day.. more so on weekends...when socializing. LOVE,LOVE, LOVE GLOSS. I purchase gloss-several at a time. When I find one one sale... purchase all I can. It seems, however, lately, that it is getting harder to find in some stores,i.e. Walgreens, Walmart, CVS. I am happy to learn of the "roots" of lip gloss. I just want to know if there is somewhere that sells it directly to, and ships it to a consumer of a lot of it. -- Contributed by: Debra D.
