Whitening Laser Dentistry

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Transforming your smile is nothing that whitening laser dentistry can't handle. This commonplace procedure instantly brings new life to your pearly whites!

A Beautiful Smile in Moments

Though none of us actually jump for joy at the prospect of sitting unguarded and defenseless in the dentist's chair, there are times when we actually go for reasons other than impacted wisdom teeth and root canals. When we want our teeth as white and beautiful as they can possibly be, of course we turn immediately to the dentist.

These days, the teeth whitening industry is enormous. It's given birth to an entire market full of at-home products designed to make the process quick and easy in the comfort of your own bathroom. While this is convenient for some, for others it doesn't offer the same results that are achieved at the dentist's office. In addition to other reasons that we'll look at momentarily, one of the greatest reasons to get your teeth whitened at the dentist is the speed at which your results will appear! For most people, one visit is all that's required to achieve a glamorous, celebrity-worthy smile.

At-Home versus In-Office Treatments

If you have plenty of time to spare, you may opt to perform routine teeth whitening sessions at home. Though it doesn't require a great deal of time, it will still demand attention and regular usage to maintain results. For some, this just isn't feasible. What are the differences between treatments performed at home and those done at the dentist's office? Let's take a look:

Do-it-Yourself

  • Options abound when it comes to whitening your teeth at home. Choose from trays, strips and even paint-on formulas. Use a strong whitening toothpaste and a touchup kit to maintain results.
  • The formulas must be used over a period of consecutive days (usually a series of weeks) in order to see visible results, and the directions must be followed to the letter. Results may not appear for weeks or, in some cases, even months.
  • On the upside, do-it-yourself kits are typically more affordable than office treatments, although in the long run they may prove less cost-effective as the product is purchased routinely and the results are not as quick to appear.

Dentist Treatments

  • Just one to one and a half hours in the dentist's office will provide you with the same results you would achieve after using an at-home treatment over a period of weeks. In other words, the results are instantaneous!
  • The treatment is costly. Bear in mind that teeth whitening (and most other cosmetic treatments) is not covered by insurance, so your payments will likely come completely out of pocket.
  • It can be quite obvious that your teeth have been whitened after the visit – the results are bold and bright! If you're self-conscious, you may want to opt for the more gradual at-home treatments.

The Whitening Laser Dentistry Process

In order to bleach your teeth using the whitening laser dentistry process, the dentist will first apply a translucent peroxide whitening gel to your teeth. Usually a thick gel or paste, the substance will be painted on to the teeth being treated. Then the laser light comes into play, aiming its rays at the gel and helping to activate the bleaching compound. It is thought that the presence of light helps the compound penetrate the teeth faster and increase the whitening level slightly.

Is the Laser Necessary?

There is some debate as to whether laser lights are even necessary in order to effectively whiten the teeth. Many dentists do not agree with the claim that the presence of light makes treatments more effective or speeds up the whitening process. They note that there are not enough clinical studies that prove the effectiveness of laser lights, despite the historical belief that a light was required to perform a successful procedure. Today, not all dentists perform whitening procedures with the use of a laser light.
