About Spray Type Foundations

Airbrush foundations and makeup are often used by professional makeup artists o provide great coverage, and a smooth, even look. Spray on foundations give a similar effect, but typically come in aerosol form rather than requiring an airbrush machine to apply. Spray on makeup bases are now often used by both makeup professionals and by average women. Many companies have developed their own foundation formulas, so spray foundation is available at a variety of price points.

For the average woman, using a spray type foundation can have many advantages:

  • Many formulas are sweat or water-resistant, so you have long-lasting coverage that won't smear. This makes spray perfect for bridal makeup, special occasions, when you need to wear makeup during hot, humid, or damp weather, and any other time when you need makeup to withstand a bit of moisture and still look great.
  • This type of makeup typically provides smooth-looking and even coverage. It can conceal brown or age spots, light freckles, and blemishes.
  • Spray type foundation can do double duty as primer, concealer, and foundation, saving time and eliminating the need for more products.
  • The makeup gives good coverage without adding weight – makeup doesn't look heavy or cakey but provides a more natural looking finish.
  • Spray type bases can work well for areas like back, chest, or legs to cover flaws for special occasions and look fabulous in revealing evening wear.

The makeup may not be the first choice for everyone, however. Those with flaky or very dry skin may find that the makeup settles or adheres to dry areas. Using a moisturizer or primer prior to applying can help the makeup adhere more evenly to the skin for those who have dry areas.

How to Apply Spray On Foundation

There are various ways to apply foundation in spray on form: spraying the product directly on the face (or other part of the body where you are applying), spraying the product into the palm of your hand and using a makeup brush or fingers to apply, or spraying the product onto a sponge or other makeup applicator and smoothing gently onto the face.

Makeup artist Carmindy typically uses a spray on type of makeup that she applies to an applicator and then smoothes on the woman's face rather than spraying, and many women find that this type of application gives them the most control over the amount of coverage and blending.

Choose the right foundation shade for your skin tone – most spray types have several shades to choose from. When you get ready to apply, shake the can very well, and then use your preferred application method. You may want to experiment with different ways to find what feels most comfortable for you and works best for you skin.

  • To spray on the face: Wear a headband, shower cap, or other hair covering to prevent makeup from being accidentally applied to the hair. Relax the face, and from approximately eight or nine inches away from the face mist the foundation in small circles starting with the forehead and working downward. Apply a second layer for more coverage if needed.
  • To apply with a sponge: Spray a small amount of the foundation directly onto the sponge. Starting with the forehead gently apply and smooth the product in small, even, downward motions or semi-circles until blended. Apply a bit more product where needed for extra coverage or concealing.
  • To apply with a foundation brush: Spray the foundation into the palm of your hand (it can also be sprayed directly on the brush, but you'll risk heavier, more uneven coverage). Gently dab the foundation brush into the product, and starting with the forehead, apply with downward brush strokes. Be sure to blend well in crevice areas, such as the dip in the chin and beside the nose.
  • To apply with fingertips, use the spray product into the palm of your hand as with the brush method, and use the same method with your fingertips acting as the 'brush.'
