Getting Started With a Smile

Like anyone else, Schlip had to start from scratch with her career. Her chosen path? A jaunt to Paris with a big grin on her face!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. What is your career background, what got you interested in smiles in the first place?

I knew since I was 9 years old that I wanted to work with makeup. When I was 18, I left the United States for Paris. I didn’t speak a word of French, I was just confident that it was what I wanted to do, and that I had to work for French Vogue!

I ended up spending over fifteen years in Europe working throughout Milan, Paris and London in the European fashion industry. When I came back to the U.S., I began working with celebrities in L.A., and the rest is history!

I work with everyone from Eva Longoria to Ellen Pompeo to Hilary Duff doing beauty commercials, print campaigns, and red carpet events. In September 2006, I launched my first book, Glamour Gurlz: The Ultimate Step-by-Step Guide to Great Make-up and Gurl Smarts.

Get your pearly whites back in action with the below tips from Joanna.

What are the top three things people can do to keep their smile vibrant and beautiful?

First, it’s all about owning it. No one can wear your look like you can, so put some confidence in those steps, be your magnificent self, and fill up that spotlight with your smile.

Second, you have to use great oral care products on a daily basis to keep up that white beautiful smile! I tell my clients to use Crest Extra White plus Scope Toothpaste and Scope White Mouthwash to keep their smile white and their breath fresh.

Third, you have to keep your lips in good shape! To keep lips soft, try a lip exfoliator or you can always gently brush your lips with an old toothbrush with a combination of Vaseline and sugar to keep lips soft & kissable.

Are there any cosmetics that can enhance the look of our teeth?

To make your smile the focus of your look, use a bright color stain, gloss or lip stick. All textures—whether matte or glossy—are right on trend. Gals with olive skin tones should go with a shade of red that has an orange/warm undertone. Cooler skin tones should go with more of a true or blue red. And, of course, make sure you have clean, white teeth and fresh breath before you walk out the door!

How long in advance should people focus on their teeth to get them their brightest and most beautiful in time for the holidays?

If you start using the great new products now, you’ll look fantastic in your holiday pictures, you’ll have fresh breath for getting close at those parties and you will be 100% prepared for your midnight kiss on New Year’s Eve with your white smile and fresh breath!

How much on average should someone expect to pay for whiter teeth?

Some people pay hundreds and thousands of dollars for whitening, but you can get really great products just by going to the drugstore. For under $5 each, you can get products that will really maintain a beautiful white smile.
