Purple Smoky Eye Technique
From LoveToKnow Makeup
Accomplishing the purple smoky eye technique means having several tools in your makeup arsenal.
Why Choose the Color Purple?
There's no doubt that when done properly, the purple smoky eye technique can look incredibly enhancing and beautiful, but why use the color purple? After all, there's no shortage of rich colors one can play with when it comes to creating smoky eyes. Even so, the color purple seems to beckon women more than any other shade. Much of the reason for this lies in the fact that the smoky eye is perfect for evenings when a glamorous look is called for, and reaching for the color black has grown tiresome.
Moreover, while it's easy to wear black when young, it gets increasingly more difficult to do so as one gets older; the color tends to make the face look tired and "drawn". Brown is sometimes used as an alternative, but while it may be great for the daytime hours, it seems to lack that certain "pop" that's needed for special events. Enter the color purple!
The Purple Smoky Eye Technique
In order to recreate the purple smoky eye technique, start with the following tools:- A good eye cream
- A primer (if eyes tend to be oily)
- A light colored eye shadow
- A flattering shade of purple
- A deep purple eyeliner
- Mascara
Begin Application
Once the face has been properly cleansed and moisturized, it's time to start creating glamorous eyes. If necessary, begin by applying an eye cream. Ideally, you'll want one that isn't greasy and that leaves the eyes looking fresh and bright. Next:
- Apply under eye concealer. If you don't have any shadows under your eyes, you may be able to skip this step, but most makeup artists recommend you don't. A really good, creamy concealer can work wonders to give eyes a bright and fresh appearance.
- Place loose powder under the eyes to catch any makeup flakes that may fall during the application process (after you’ve finished applying color simply use a large, soft brush to sweep the powder away).
- Select the lightest eye shadow shade (champagne, bone, shell, or any other similar color) and sweep it across the entire eye (including up to the brows and the lower lid).
- If using a contouring shade, apply it now (if not, don't worry, it's not entirely necessary).
- Now it's time to apply the eyeliner. While not necessary, eyeliner will provide more staying power, and will allow your eyes to continue to "pop" as time wears on. Line the top of the eye and the bottom.
If you want a "fierce" look, apply the liner as close to the lashes as possible. For wider looking eyes, and when working with the bottom of the eyes, apply the eyeliner farther away from the lashes so that the lashes "show". In other words, apply the liner under the lashes, not on "top" of them.
- When you draw the eyeliner, you can either sweep it "up" slightly or not. Experiment with this technique until you find the style that works best with your eye shape.
- Once these steps have been completed, it's time to apply the deepest (purple) shade of eye shadow. After dipping your brush into the shadow, sweep it along the lower crease of your eye, taking care not to go above the crease. Do this as many times as needed until the desired "smokiness" is reached.
- Finish with a few coats of mascara.
A Few Additional Notes
In addition to the steps above, keep in mind that you can use an eyelash curler to create and even greater impact. Both plastic and metal eyelash curlers are available on the market, so experiment with both until you find the type that suits your lashes best.
Lastly, don't forget to keep the rest of your makeup simple. This includes your lip color (a strong mouth will look garish, so try a nude instead). To see the best way to wear a nude, see the lip color that goes with smoky eyes slideshow; this way you'll be able to know exactly how the look works.
Putting It All Together
Gorgeously colored purple smoky eyes can be yours if you gather all of the appropriate tools and take your time during the application. The key to creating just the right look, with just the right amount of intensity, is practice. This way, you'll be able to create sensuous eyes in no time!
