The Different Prom Makeup Styles
There are a lot of different prom makeup styles one can employ, so it can be difficult to decide which one to choose. Here’s how:
- You, Only Better: This philosophy is similar to a bridal look, and it implores the wearer to simply ramp up her everyday look. In this way, one doesn’t look strange or unnatural. You literally look like yourself, only better!
- Easy to Wear: With this philosophy, the wearer chooses a makeup style that comes naturally to her. The thinking behind this look is that if it feels natural, it will look natural, and truly, the more comfortable you are with the makeup, the better you’ll look.
Choose A Look
Below are several different prom makeup styles. Choose the look that suits you best.
Shiny Lips
Shiny or glossy lips are a great way to go on prom night because they make your lips look kissable, pouty and gorgeous. This look is very similar to the classic red lipstick look, but there are a few exceptions:
- Step 1: The first step is all about providing a flawless canvas. Start by choosing a foundation that exactly matches your skin tone (and this is only if you need foundation at all- if not, skip this step). Follow up with a matching concealor applied only to the areas that need it.
- Step 2: Find a lipstick (or a lip liner) that closely matches the natural color of your lips. Apply with the tip of your finer, gently "smudging" it as you go along. Blot.
- Step 3: Now it’s time to focus on the eyes (the lipstick is now settling into your lips and "grabbing" the skin). Here, you can apply an overall base shadow to the lids (like one in bone or champagne), but it’s not necessary.
From there, use an eyelash curler (the plastic ones are the least scary). You can also use an eyeliner here to gently dust the eyes with color, but remember to use a gentle hand; after all, the lips are supposed to be the focus.
- Final Step: It’s time to apply the lip gloss. Use a really good one, like Lancôme’s Juicy Tubes that really imparts loads of color and shine. Just remember that with this look, you’ll probably need to reapply several times a night. Top off the look with a little bit of translucent powder to "set".
Smoky Eyes
Smoky eyes means an intense focus on the eyes, paired with a nude lip. With this look, there’s much talk about having a base shadow or a highlighter shade. With the base shadow, you'll want to apply this color first before you apply the liner or the contour shade. A highlighter shade is optional, but it really isn’t necessary, so feel free to skip it.
- Step 1: As always, prep the face first, and cover up any outstanding blemishes.
- Step 2: Gather your eye shadows and liners because you’ll be using a combination of both. Apply the eyeliner. Reach for one that is dark and smoky, like black, charcoal grey, deep purple, deep blue or forest green (the color you choose depends on which goes best with your skin tone). Make sure that the liner goes with/or is in the same family as the eyeshadow you’ll be applying. Completely rim the eyes with the liner.
- Step 3: Apply the shadow by going up to the crease of the eye (but not above it!). Blend completely.
- Final Step: Finish with a few coats of mascara.
Classic Red and Old World Glamour
Nothing feels more glamorous, divine and sophisticated than red lips. Only choose this look if you feel you can pull it off (and trust us, you can), and you love being the center of attention; with this look, you will be.
- Step 1: Prep face (follow steps outlined above).
- Step 2: Apply lipstick with finger. Like most professional makeup artists, it’s really best to use your finger, at least with the first application because it allows your skin to "grab" the color. With subsequent applications, it’s fine to just apply the lipstick directly from the tube.
- Step 3: Follow up with a lip liner. Be very careful with this step; you don’t want any unnatural lip lines. Slightly blend the edges of the lip line to ensure there are no sharp delineations.
- Final Step: It’s time for the eyes. Once again, apply a slight dusting of liner to the top and bottom of your eyes and then follow up with mascara. It’s important to apply some color to the eyes, otherwise you run the risk of looking slightly "beady-eyed" in photographs.
Putting It All Together
As you can see, there are many different prom makeup styles just waiting to be explored for that special night. Truth be told, your best bet is to try out all three. Wear them on different days and see how you feel in each look. Do you get any comments or compliments? If one look receives a number of compliments, then that may be the one!
