Modeling Agencies

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Modeling agencies are a vital tool for anyone who aspires to see her face grace the cover of magazines or to set foot on European runways. However, there is plenty to be aware of before striking out toward landing your dream agent.

Modeling Agencies

How Modeling Agencies Work

If you live in a major city such as Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York, you will have a bountiful list of agencies to choose from. If you live in a smaller town, the resources available to you may be scarcer. Ultimately, no matter where you reside, all modeling agencies basically operate in the same manner.

Submitting

The first step to getting picked up by a modeling agency is to submit your pictures and information. You cannot simply knock on the door of an agency or make an appointment to see someone. These meetings are by invitation only, so you must have a strong plan in place to get your foot in the door.

Sourcing some quality self portraits is an important first step. No need to spend thousands of dollars; however, it is to your advantage to work with a reputable photographer to save yourself time, money, and convenience. Always check references and a photographer's portfolio before agreeing to work with him/her and utilize a makeup artist as well. Together they will help you to look your best and advance you in the right direction.

Presentation is the key to submitting to agencies. Always follow their specific guidelines. Some will accept email submittals while many others still require snail mail. Every agency is different, and the more elite they are, the more hoops you will have to jump through. Know your stuff from the beginning and you will come across as motivated, informed, ambitious, and fully prepared for all of the competition and hard work ahead.

Gaining Experience

Few people get discovered in malls and restaurants, despite the success stories you may hear. The media often ceases to mention the years of hard work and the countless rejection that went into producing an "overnight success." It is important to gain experience where you can, even before you submit to an agency. Rather than jumping the gun and skipping vital steps to the process, seek out small jobs on your own through online classifieds and casting agencies.

Sometimes you will work for peanuts, other times you won't get paid at all. However, building that resume is of the utmost importance. It shows an agency they don't have to start from scratch, which saves them time, money, and the hassles they despise.

Craigslist.com is a common place to find modeling jobs. As with any Internet connection, be safe whenever going on a casting, bring a friend with you, and always do as much of a background check on the client as possible before going. There are too many aspiring models out there falling prey to predators simply because they did not do their homework. They had stars in their eyes and unfortunately paid the consequences. If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

Beware of Scams

On the subject of predators and scammers, there are plenty of them, and it is important to recognize the red flags within this industry.

Asking For Payment

Reputable modeling agencies will never ask you for money up front. Outside of getting your portfolio created, there shouldn't be any fees. Modeling agencies make money when you make money, end of story. They do their job first, and then after you land the gig, payments are settled. Any agency that asks you for "service fees", "contract deposits", or anything else that sounds suspicious should be treated with the utmost caution. Check with the Better Business Bureau and take advantage of the Internet to research the reputation of these establishments. Protect yourself as much as possible, especially when you are first getting your feet wet in this potentially shady field.

Modeling Schools

John Casablancas, Barbizon, and many other names of companies you may hear about. Claiming to be schools, they cost a fortune and usually teach you very little. They claim to provide you time with agents and casting directors, presenting to you a shortcut ahead of the competition. However, modeling school graduates are rarely seen by the industry pros that matter, and most find themselves in the same place they started, only thousands of dollars poorer.

These "schools" also disguise themselves in the forms of talent searches, modeling competitions, and workshops. Remember, people are already banging down the doors of modeling agencies, and many of these places receive literally thousands of submissions per week. They are not out "searching" for new talents.

Start Small

Local modeling agencies are your best bet when you are first starting out. There will always be time later to work your way up to those that represent today's big names. In fact, it is almost impossible to land a contract with one of the larger modeling agencies until you taken a few steps up the ladder.

Never Give Up On Your Dreams

If this article easily discouraged you, you may not be cut out for the modeling industry. It is a fiercely competitive field and not for the weak of heart. However, if inspired by these words instead and if you have the talent, the drive, and the right look, then the stars just may be aligned in your direction. Best of luck to you as you encounter the crazy, glamorous, and rewarding world of modeling agencies.

Hi MaiSee,

First, here are some companies you may find worth checking out:

Usually, the top modeling agencies need a Polaroid picture of you (without any makeup). The best thing you can do is have a friend take it for you (this way you look relaxed). Contact any one of the companies listed above to find out more and best of luck to you in your career!

Hi Julia,

Thanks for sharing your story. I know it must be very disappointing, but it may help someone else from expecting too much for one of these schools. We wish you the best of luck with your career!
