Mineral Makeup Product Review

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Needless to say, I was thrilled when I received my testers from Maki-Yaz for this mineral makeup product review. Although I spend ample time writing and editing at Makeup as well as have years of cosmetic use under my belt, I had yet to try any of the true mineral makeup products on the market. Certainly it is a growing and evolving business, but I had been stuck in a bit of a makeup rut. After performing this mineral makeup product review, I have decided to break out and explore more in this natural cosmetics marketplace.

About Maki-Yaz

Maki-Yaz is a small but growing mineral cosmetics line. Two sisters started the company through their work as Bridal Makeup Artists, expanding into a natural makeup line. Not only does their makeup offer all the benefits of minerals (natural sunscreen and healthy ingredients), but their specialty is customizable products. Certainly one of my own personal frustrations with foundation and powder makeup was finding the best color and type for my individual skin. Maki-Yaz’s concept alleviates that common dilemma.

Actual Mineral Makeup Product Review

Maki-Yaz sent me three of their core products to try, a face powder, bronzer and blush combination, and eye shadow. After a month of use, the following describes my experience.

Light Translucent Powder

A loose mineral powder, this product was the perfect color for my light skin tone. With blonde hair and neutral skin, it was nice to find a powder that blended nicely with my skin tone, but didn’t bleach me out. So many of the face powders I have tried in the past tend to sit too dark or light on my fair skin.

In addition to the color, this powder felt light on my skin – providing a natural dewy shimmer without appearing like I was wearing any makeup. Go slowly with your application; layer the powder to determine the appropriate amount of skin smoothing and shimmer. It took a few tries, but the balance is achievable.

The powder also lasts longer than any other loose face powder I have tried. The coverage is better too – where most non-mineral based loose powder seems to disappear quickly with little ability to smooth the skin, this powder behaves more like a compact powder in its ability to offer a longer lasting coverage.

The only downfall I discovered with this product was in its ability to control my oil. While it gave my late 30s skin a youthful shimmer, it also looked a little too shiny for my tastes. I have always had out-of-control oily skin and generally prefer the matte look powder offers me. Although, the more matte powders do tend to age my skin, as they settle easily into my newer wrinkles. This powder did seem to hide my wrinkles, rather than enhancing them.

Cheek Color Bronzer

As a fair skinned individual, just leaving winter’s chill, my face is rather pale. Using this bronzer as a blush was perfect. It provided a nice color enhancer that truly looked natural. Although, be careful! A little goes a LONG way with this product. I barely had to dust a dab on my cheeks for intense color. Instead, I learned to lightly swipe the blush brush into a very small amount of the bronzer and then gently sweep on my skin.

Eye Shadows

As a mineral eye shadow, this product was a loose powder. Being used to pressed eye shadows, it was an entertaining experience playing with these shadows. At first I found the loose powder falling on my lashes as an irritation, but then later decided the look was rather delightful. It added some natural sparkle to my eyes and lashes. The colors were very natural and blended well. For a more intense color, you could also moisten the shadow brush before applying.

Conclusion

I am not sure if it was from all the hype, but I did feel for the first time ever while performing this mineral makeup product review I was doing my skin a favor with my makeup. Previously I would apologize to my skin while I layered on the foundation, concealer, and powder. Covering and hiding my skin and preventing it from living and breathing naturally. But, instead, with this makeup I felt agreeable about the product on my skin. It not only looked incredibly natural, it felt light and innate instead of heavy and contrived.
