Makeup for Your Skin Tone

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Finding makeup for your skin tone doesn’t have to be an ordeal. Today’s cosmetics companies make it easier than ever to find flattering hues, as long as you know some simple tricks and tips to finding those ideal products.

Discover Your Skin Tone

So many makeup products look great in their fancy store boxes, but once you get home and try it on, the results are often less than ideal. Especially if you shop at drug stores, where sample products are basically non-existent, you probably find yourself stuck with plenty of cosmetics you’re never able to use.

Instead of wasting time, money and product, discover your true skin tone and use this knowledge as power when you shop. Most skin tones are categorized in two ways – warm and cool. However, with so many nationalities out there, can it really be so simple as two distinct groups? Fortunately, the answer is yes, and you can figure out which team you’re on by running a very simple test. Try on a white shirt, followed by a cream colored shirt. Which did you look better in? If the answer is white, you have cool skin. If cream was the flattering choice, then your skin is warm-toned.

Now that you know what your skin tone is, you can begin to shop for products that will enhance your beauty rather than hinder it.

The Perfect Foundation

Foundation is just that – the foundation for our entire makeup look, and yet it is also the trickiest of products to buy. Pale-skinned women run the risk of tinting themselves orange, while darker girls struggle to find a color rich enough to adequately cover and conceal.

Foundation usually contains a gold or blue tone, used to compliment a wide array of skin colors. Just like the shirt test, it’s important to find the color that works best for you. If you have cool skin, stick to the base with pink or blue undertones.

If you have warm skin, then stick with yellow and gold undertones. Your mother may have taught you that testing foundation on your hand or arm is a great way to find the perfect match, however this advice is outdated and inaccurate. If samples are available, apply onto your freshly washed face to find the perfect match.

Adding Some Color

After you’ve found your perfect foundation, you may be wondering about other makeup for your skin tone. Again, you can follow the warm/cool rule to find your ideal shades. Some cosmetics companies even label their makeup by these two hue families, helping to narrow your selection further. If you choose to wear blush, pick a pink or beige if you’re fair skinned (cool toned).

The warm coppers and deep browns you see in the blush aisle look best on those with olive and yellow skin (warm toned). If it’s summertime, you may find yourself needing a new blush, as tanned gals will demand a different color, usually some shade of peach or coral. When wearing blush, the goal is to look naturally kissed by the sun or snow, so don’t overdo it. Subtle is always best when it comes to your makeup.

Lipstick can be as tricky as foundation, so again don’t be afraid to take the time to properly test your options. Some makeup counters provide strips of white paper to test lipsticks on, but you may want to keep a paper pad in your purse if you know you’re going to be shopping for cosmetics. Run the lipstick on the white paper – if it looks brown, dark red, or are a very light hue, then they will look great on Asian skin or other nationalities with a yellow tint. Those who are very fair will want to try pinks and pale purples. If you are at a professional makeup counter at the time of purchase, ask the cosmetics worker for help – you might get some great advice.

Special Makeup for Your Skin Tone

Women of color used to struggle to find makeup well-suited to their coloring. Fortunately, today’s makeup manufacturers have started to embrace ethnic women instead of turning them away. Special lines, such as the Queen Collection from Cover Girl, is specially suited to darker gals, and features Queen Latifah as its endorser.

Some brands are focusing on just one special feature, such as Almay, which makes the intense i-color eye shadow for blue, brown, hazel and green eyes. This product will compliment your eye color while also helping it to “pop” with a contrasting shade.

These are just two examples of makeup for your skin tone that can help you look your best. Visit your favorite makeup counter or peruse the cosmetics aisle at your local drug store to discover more great ideas and find inspiration for your best look yet.
