Lush Cosmetics

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Lush Cosmetics has an interesting niche in the cosmetics industry, selling handmade products in fun packages at cool deli-style stores. With an emphasis on freshness and fun, you may just find yourself looking for a famous chunk of their soap, a fizzing bath bomb, or moisturizing body butter.

History

Lush Cosmetics started in the late seventies, with handmade products that were unique in the marketplace. The Body Shop was their first buyer in 1978, and by 1988 the company created Cosmetics to Go in southern England. Their signature Bath Bombs, Shampoo Bars and Massage Bars took off and the company enjoyed a successful mail order business.

Cosmetics to Go suffered some setbacks, and the company went under. In 1994, they rebuilt the company, again with successful results. The company now has over 370 shops worldwide, as well as a successful mail order business.

Lush Cosmetics Philosophy

Lush Cosmetics’ emphasis is on fresh, handmade products that use few preservatives. Using organic fruit and vegetables, as well as essential oils and safe ingredients, Lush is able to deliver on their promise. They never use animal ingredients, nor do they test on animals. Ingredients are always listed on the outside of the packaging, so there are never any secrets. The home-made technique begins with making products by hand, printing their own labels, and making their own fragrances. Lush products are reasonably priced, considering the amount of care that goes into making them.

Against Animal Testing

Lush Cosmetics are firmly against testing products on animals, working to prevent the cruel and unnecessary treatment of animals for the sake of beauty. Lush does their testing on humans instead, and never buys ingredients from other companies that engage in animal testing. They stand behind their cause, with a guarantee that if they can get a company to stop their animal testing, they will buy ingredients from them. They have successfully turned ingredient manufacturers against animal testing by showing the companies the alternatives.

Natural Beauty Products

Lush Cosmetic’s commitment to using fresh ingredients and producing handmade products provides consumers with an array of very unique offerings to choose from.

Bath

  • Bath Bombs – An updated take on the bath cube, these globe or heart-shaped “bombs” are made of essential oils, bursting with fizzing fragrance. Some varieties include confetti, flower petals, natural butter, leaves or fruit that add to the bathing experience.
  • Buttercreams – These glycerine soaps are hand-rolled in a variety of special items, including chocolate, cocoa butter, petals, and more. Buttercreams are made of 15% soap and 85% natural oils, butters, glycerine, essential oils and plant infusions to soften skin.
  • Shower Jellies – Another unique product, shower jellies can be chilled or frozen for exhilarating results. This fun product can be used to wash body and hair, as well as producing a fun bubble bath.
