Fairy Makeup Ideas
From LoveToKnow Makeup
Whether you're dressing up for a party or for Halloween, you need a few fairy makeup ideas if you want to convincingly look the part. The makeup is one of the most fun parts of putting this costume together! Comprised primarily of sweet, light colors, the look is easy for nearly anyone to achieve.
Fairy Beauty
Every year, people excitedly plan their Halloween costumes. Usually there's something involving fake blood, long black wigs, warts and other details that may seem less than pretty, to put it mildly.
On the other side of the coin, though, are the elegant costumes that demand equally becoming makeup to look truly believable. This can be tricky, because attractive costumes, such as ballerinas, fairies and princesses, don't require the kind of heavy makeup that clowns, witches and demons do. The trick, then, is to look the part even if your everyday face is visible.
DIY Fairy Makeup Ideas
The good news is that fairy makeup is fairly easy to pull off. If there's one color you'll really want to use, it's pink – and plenty of it. Of course, you don't want to look sickly, either, so it's important to utilize shades of pink that don't wash you out. The key is to select colors that give your skin the kind of princess-worthy glow you'd expect to see on some of your favorite fairy tale characters.
It's not just pink you'll need, though. Make liberal use of pretty pastel colors for the most true-to-life fairy appearance possible. You'll need the following items for a full face:
- Moisturizer
- Highlighter
- Foundation
- Pink lip gloss
- Cream blush or cheek mousse
- Cream eye shadows
Notice that mascara and eyeliner aren't parts of this list. Unless you're dressing as an evil fairy, you probably don't want dark, dramatic eyes. Your entire face should twinkle lightly, with no particular feature standing out over others.
Getting Started
Take inspiration from some of your favorite pop culture heroines. Characters in novels, movies and even cartoons are all great choices, because they give you some idea about the type of fairy look you'd like to achieve. If you're hoping to go the flirtatious, charming fairy route, consider the elegant looks sported by Drew Barrymore in Ever After and by Michelle Pfeiffer in A Midsummer Night's Dream. Both styles were impressively simple, yet still immensely convincing with the help of subtle makeup.
Achieve your own take on the look by following these simple steps.
- Apply moisturizer to your face. This creates an instantly dewy, smooth canvas to work on.
- Pour or pump a small amount of your everyday foundation onto the back of your hand. Add a small amount of highlighter (such as Revlon Skinlights or Smashbox Artificial Lights) to the foundation and stir the mixture with a foundation brush. Use your fingers to dab the mixture all over your face, blending well.
- Apply your cream blush or cheek mousse to the apples of your cheeks, taking great care to blend immediately and thoroughly. A soft pink hue, such as Kevyn Aucoin Beauty The Creamy Moist Glow in Liquifuchsia, is perfect for this purpose. It creates a radiant glow and an innocent flush.
- A selection of cream eye shadows will add subtle shimmer and glimmer to your eyelids without making your eyes the main attraction. Try Clinique Touch Tint for Eyes Shimmer Formula in Pink Sheen as a base shade and finish with a dab of e.l.f. Eye Shadow Cream in Olive or Blueberry for just the slightest hint of colorful pastel.
- Your lips should be soft and supple to start with, so be sure to eliminate dryness prior to getting started by scrubbing gently with a toothbrush to gently exfoliate dead skin. Your lips will then be ready for a healthy coating of lip gloss in a berry, wine or pink shade. Try Fresh Sugar Cherry (a soft rose) or Fresh Sugar Fairy (an extremely appropriate shimmering light pink) for a glossy finish to your look.
Extras
If you want to make your face look a bit more decorated, consider adding glitter to your cheekbones, temples or around the eyes for a much more dramatic, ethereal presentation. If you really want to be bold, invest in a makeup kit that essentially offers a set of fairy makeup ideas in one convenient package. Find these sets at costume stores.

Hi JJ,
Thanks so much for sharing that cautionary tale with us! We appreciate it!

Getting it in the eye is irritating and uncomfortable, and you'll wind up with bloodshot, watering eyes and running makeup. Not to mention it hurts! If you insist on glitter instead of just powder makeup shimmer, opt for a glitter gel. Try the little girls makeup if you can't find it in the big girls playthings! JJ
