Emo Makeup
From LoveToKnow Makeup
Emo makeup has become popular with teenagers across the nation, but this fun combination of punk rock and gothic darkness can be a winning look for anyone.
What is Emo?
Much to the bewilderment of older adults, the term "emo" is used quite frequently with today's generation. What exactly does it mean? Some people equate emo to a particular genre of music, while others credit it to a specific style of clothing.
Officially, emo is a subculture that finds its roots in both punk and gothic fashion. Because of this, emo makeup plays a large role in pulling off this unique look. Cosmetics are usually a combination of childlike innocence and hard darkness. Envision black eyeliner mixed with colorful glitter and you have just achieved one popular emo look.
In the 1980s, emo described a specific genre of punk music; however, those who are currently considered to be emo listen to a wide variety of music styles. Today, emo almost exclusively refers to a "soft punk" choice of fashion and cosmetics.
The Personality of Emo
When it comes to personality traits, emo individuals tend to be classified as shy, sensitive, and touchy. These emotions carry over into the outward appearance, providing a perfect start for the dark eyes and sad designs often found in emo makeup and on clothing.
Examples of the emo personality run rampant on websites such as myspace, where sulky self-portraits and dark poetry can be found in abundance. While those who are emo usually appear mysterious or reclusive, the truth of the matter is they often love the attention they receive for looking and acting differently from their peers.
Little Girl Not So Lost
Emo makeup and style often find followers in teenage suburbanites. Critics frequently attack this tender demographic. This is because young emos often appear to be whining about their lives while they email and blog from their parents' million dollar homes. Whether these observers are correct in their judgments is up for debate; however, there is definite evidence that many of these young people are far from being down and out when it comes to life circumstance.
This collision of respectable social class mixed with adolescent angst gives the "soft punk" look that emo makeup is becoming famous for. Dark eyeliner finds its way completely around the eye rather than just the top or bottom, while pale foundation is used on the face to contrast against darkened hair.
When you ask an emo how to get the "emo look," chances are they will laugh at you and tell you that anyone who is "trying" to be emo is not a genuine member of this elite group of social dramatics. However, it is possible to coax some information out of them and steal some tips.
Hot Topic has long been celebrated as the Mecca of emo. Their line of pink and turquoise eye shadow will work with the dark eyeliner to finish off the eyes. The next step is finding a sheer or pink gloss for the lips. Lips always come in second to the eyes when it comes to emo makeup, so finding a subtle but fun cosmetic for your pout is ideal.
Hair is usually worn with long bangs and is often straightened. Accessories may include armbands, jelly bracelets, and brightly colored converse sneakers. Anything that makes an edgy statement is acceptable as well. However, whether or not you have the clothes and accessories, emo makeup is what truly makes the look.
The Price of Emo Makeup
Many young people receive criticism and bullying from the already established emo students at their school. These teens may be accused of being a "poser" or a "wannabe" when it comes to the emo look and lifestyle. Emos tend to hold tight ranks and there is an extremely fine line drawn between who is authentic and who is looking to abandon their genuine self a little too easily.
It can be a challenge to understand the unique dynamics of the emo world, and at times it can be frustrating. People who choose to switch to emo makeup and style should be cautioned that they are making a bold move. Emo makeup causes you to stand out from the crowd and that can at times be a daunting task. It is not for the weak of heart. And that is exactly why so many strong-willed teenagers of today love this mystifying look.

Hi Raven,
Thank you for the thoughtful comment- and people who say that obviously don't know what they are talking about and live in a world of stereotypes- not too bright if you ask me! Thanks for the post!

Yep, everything, including makeup, looks best in moderation. However, everyone has the ability to express themselves in whatever manner they deem appropriate. Thanks for taking the time to write us here!
