Dior 5 Color Eye Shadow

Despite being a bit of a costly indulgence, I can't resist the great allure of Dior 5-Color Eye Shadow palettes. Ask any devotee and she'll tell you exactly why these little collections are so fantastic and irresistible.

They're routinely recognized as being some of the best eye shadows in the business, and it's no wonder. Dior's incredible collection is a veritable rainbow of gleaming, true colors that run the gamut from softly neutral to boldly ostentatious. Simply put, there's something for everyone. The beauty of this particular palette is that there are just so many options to work with, given that there are five colors.

If you're paying a little more than, say, you ever imagined you would pay for eye shadow, you can guarantee you'll get more than just good color payoff. The packaging really lives up to the renowned Dior label. The sleek, navy blue compact is adorned with an iridescent "CD" moniker reflected behind a "Dior" logo engraved in silver. It's easy to pop open with a quick press of the button.

Of course, the packaging comes second to the actual product. Inside you'll find two miniature, double-ended applicators and, of course, five generous pans of eye shadow. I'd be lying if I said the applicators are at all useful to me; in fact, I don't use them at all. The colors, on the other hand, are all indulgent and very nearly perfect. Bear in mind that there are plenty of palettes available – I own several and find that they all get equal use.

• Night Butterfly is a collection of rich, dramatic hues destined to be fall essentials. With three varying shades of purple, a gleaming gray and a shimmery black, it's a recipe for the perfect smoky eye.
• Nude Pink Design is ideal for anyone who prefers a little neutrality. Four blush tones are offset nicely by a rich plum, which provides great definition when worn in the crease.
• Tropical Light is the palette to grab when spring rolls around. It's packed with playful hues like grass green, petal pink, shimmery lavender, mocha and cream.
• Sunset Café is easily my favorite of them all. The shades range from gold and warm cream to shimmery petal and brownish lavender; it's a unique combination that somehow just works.

Great colors mean nothing if the formula isn't outstanding. I've come across so many beautiful eye shadows that vanish within an hour or two of application or just crease in the worst way. That's not the case with Dior 5-Color Eye Shadow. It's easily one of the most long-wearing shadows I've had the pleasure of using; in fact, I'd say it trumps anything else I've tried when it comes to staying power. It also boasts a soft, silky finish that somehow feels almost velvety to the touch.

Since it's so soft, it's also very easy to apply. As mentioned, I don't rely on the included applicators; instead, I use a selection of high quality eye makeup brushes, which pick up just the right amount of color and allow me greater precision and control of where my makeup is applied.

No matter what eye shadow I use or how long lasting it may be I never go without an eye shadow primer. Dior has proven to me that it isn't necessary to use one with their amazing shadows, but I love the smooth canvas that a primer gives my eyelids – it's the perfect starting point for the eye shadow, and it ensures that my color lasts through everything, even humidity and eye irritation!

It's clear that I'm a huge fan of Dior's eye shadow palettes; in fact, I use almost nothing else. The variety is incomparable and the formula is just right. At $56 each, the palette is certainly an expense, but a worthwhile one if you use them as often as I do.
