Black Opal Cosmetics

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Black Opal Cosmetics has a full line of makeup for black women. According to the Black Opal web site, the line, with products that typically cost less than $20, was created in 1994 by Cheryl Burgess, an African American dermatologist. She developed the skincare line to help African Americans with troubling skin problems. In addition to the skin care products and cosmetics, there are also products available for men.

Black Opal Cosmetics Foundations

African American women and other women of color who are looking for a foundation that will match their skin and hide blemishes should try Black Opal's foundations. Black Opal's foundations are available in a wide range of shades and textures. For example, there is a liquid foundation with oil control to reduce shine, and Flawless Match, a foundation that is packaged in a pump and is said to adjust to match nearly every skin tone.

The line's perfecting powder makeup is a cream to powder foundation that is suitable for oily skin. There are also concealers and powders for setting the foundations, concealing pimples and reducing shine. Black Opal has bronzers in different shades to impart an extra glow. Bronzers are usually added to the face for highlighting areas for a sun-kissed glow.

Lip Colors

The line has lipsticks, glosses, and lip liqueurs. The lipsticks are available in True Tone and Cream Shine. The True Tone lipsticks are more matte than the Cream Shine lipsticks. Colors in the lipsticks and glosses range from reds to browns. Shades of berry and wine are also present.

Want the look of a lipstick but with the shine of a gloss? The Patent Gloss lipsticks are highly pigmented glosses that are said to be long lasting. The glosses are applied with wands that are included in the packages. The glosses will, however, wear off throughout the day, particularly if the wearer constantly licks her lips, eats, drinks, kisses, or do all the other things that women do during their busy daily routines. Keep the glosses in your makeup bag for touchups.

Black Opal Shadows

Black Opal Cosmetics sells shadows in quads in complementary shades. The shades range from natural browns, to blues and purples. The shadows may be applied with a brush or with a sponge. The shadows also inhibit shine by absorbing oil, says the Black Opal site. In addition to shadows, the line also has eyeliners.

The pencils must be sharpened occasionally, but the automatic eye definers do not need sharpening. The point can be twisted up whenever it gets dull or breaks. The wood eye pencils are available in shades that include a black, copper, dark green, brown and bronze. The automatic eye definer is sold in fewer colors, only brown and black.

Black Opal versus Black Radiance

  • Black Opal Cosmetics is sold in selected Walmart and CVS stores. It is sometimes sold where Black Radiance, another makeup brand targeted to African American women is sold.
  • Black Opal, compared to its competitor, Black Radiance, appears to have a greater

variety in the types of foundations that are available for women of color.

  • Black Opal has a variety of blotting powders concealers that are developed to fade and eliminate blemishes as well as cover them. The line, however, is a bit more expensive than Black Radiance, which sells foundation for under $5. Black Opal's foundations cost about $10.
  • Black Radiance may be easier to find; it appears to be available in a greater variety of drugstores and discount stores. Black Radiance's shades may be a tad more appealing, but beware of shades that look better in the package than on the wearer in any makeup line. Particularly when buying from drugstores, learn about the return policy before buying.
