Applying Eye Makeup

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Applying eye makeup can be tricky, confusing, and downright aggravating.

Applying Eye Makeup

Applying eye makeup, however, can be a cinch if you:

  • Understand which colors are right for you.
  • Have an understanding of your eye shape.
  • Are aware of the look you are trying to achieve.
Understanding the Basics
Tips Basics
Choose colors that are right for youThis depends primarily on your skin’s undertone and on your eye color.
  • Brown eyes look best in shades of espresso, bone and champagne.
  • Blue eyes pop in navy blue, dark brown and cream.
  • Green and hazel eyes look great in browns, greens and shades of taupe.
  • Grey eyes are smashing in black, grey, and a variety of blue shades.
Eye Shape
  • If you have wide eyes, you can rim both the upper and lower lids to make the eyes appear even wider.
  • Small or narrow eyes should not rim all the way around the eye, especially in the inner corners of the eye. Doing so only causes the narrow eye to appear smaller. Instead, only line, or color the outer half of the eye, while using an upward motion.
Different Looks
  • Daytime looks should be simple. Give definition to the eye, without overpowering it, with lots of liner and shadow. The key is to look polished.
  • Evening looks are the best time to try a dramatic eye. If you ever wanted to wear mascara, eye shadow, and liner all at once, this is the best time to do it.
  • For weekends, the key is to look accessible and comfortable. If that means black liquid liner, and red lips a la Gwen Stefani, then so be it. And if it means just a bit of bone eye shadow coupled with a softly smudged eye, then do that. The key is comfort; do what feels right.

Before we get started, here are the tools you’ll need:

  • Brow pencil or shadows.
  • Eye Shadow
  • Eye Liner
  • Mascara

A Note on Brows

Take a look at your brow shape, and see if you need to clean it up by tweezing, or waxing. If you do wax, then schedule an appointment with a professional eyebrow waxer because it is very risky to try it on your own. No matter which you choose, waxing or tweezing, remember to go slow. You don’t want to take off more than you have to.

If the eyebrow looks good, but sparse, fill it in with an eyebrow pencil or shadow. Remember to use a light hand. Try Revlon’s Brow Fantasy. The pencil comes in three shades; Brunette, Dark Blonde, and Dark Brown, so you’ll be able to get the look you want to relative ease.

Working with the Eyes

Now that your brows are nicely framing your face, it’s time to work with the eye itself.

  • The first step is to apply the lightest shade from your quad, or trio compact. You want to apply this shade to the brow bone; the highest part of the eye that sits right under the brow.
  • If you are working with eyeliner, now is the time to apply it. Line your upper lid and your lower lid. Lining the eyes before you apply the medium, and the dark shades of your quad compact, ensures that you won’t smudge your liner.
  • Now apply your medium shade. This goes right in the crease of the eye. Cover the crease completely.
  • Lastly, apply the deepest shade on the lowest part of the eyelid. Finish off with one to two coats of your favorite mascara, making sure to wipe off any excess mascara from the brush. Failing to do so may result in unsightly clumps.

Additional Tips

Here are some additional tips to help you in applying eye makeup with ease:

  • Before you apply your eye makeup, put some loose powder underneath the eye. The loose powder will “catch” any eye shadow that falls while you’re applying your makeup. Doing this helps to keep the rest of the face clear of the eye makeup you are working with. When you’re finished applying your eye makeup, just whisk away the excess powder with a large velor powder brush.
  • Remember to balance your face. If you are going for a strong eye, then go with a soft lip, even lip gloss. You do not want your eyes and lips to “fight” for attention.
  • Keep some eye makeup removers handy for quick clean ups, and unforeseen accidents. If all else fails, use some Vaseline to clean up and then just reapply.

The Eyes Have It

Applying eye makeup is a wonderful way to stand out from the crowd. As long as you have the right tools, and go slow during the application process, you’ll be looking gorgeous in no time.
