Applying Eye Makeup
From LoveToKnow Makeup
Applying eye makeup can be tricky, confusing, and downright aggravating.
Applying Eye Makeup
Applying eye makeup, however, can be a cinch if you:
- Understand which colors are right for you.
- Have an understanding of your eye shape.
- Are aware of the look you are trying to achieve.
| Tips | Basics |
| Choose colors that are right for you | This depends primarily on your skin’s undertone and on your eye color.

Before we get started, here are the tools you’ll need:
- Brow pencil or shadows.
- Eye Shadow
- Eye Liner
- Mascara
A Note on Brows
Take a look at your brow shape, and see if you need to clean it up by tweezing, or waxing. If you do wax, then schedule an appointment with a professional eyebrow waxer because it is very risky to try it on your own. No matter which you choose, waxing or tweezing, remember to go slow. You don’t want to take off more than you have to.
If the eyebrow looks good, but sparse, fill it in with an eyebrow pencil or shadow. Remember to use a light hand. Try Revlon’s Brow Fantasy. The pencil comes in three shades; Brunette, Dark Blonde, and Dark Brown, so you’ll be able to get the look you want to relative ease.
Working with the Eyes
Now that your brows are nicely framing your face, it’s time to work with the eye itself.
- The first step is to apply the lightest shade from your quad, or trio compact. You want to apply this shade to the brow bone; the highest part of the eye that sits right under the brow.
- If you are working with eyeliner, now is the time to apply it. Line your upper lid and your lower lid. Lining the eyes before you apply the medium, and the dark shades of your quad compact, ensures that you won’t smudge your liner.
- Now apply your medium shade. This goes right in the crease of the eye. Cover the crease completely.
- Lastly, apply the deepest shade on the lowest part of the eyelid. Finish off with one to two coats of your favorite mascara, making sure to wipe off any excess mascara from the brush. Failing to do so may result in unsightly clumps.
Additional Tips
Here are some additional tips to help you in applying eye makeup with ease:
- Before you apply your eye makeup, put some loose powder underneath the eye. The loose powder will “catch” any eye shadow that falls while you’re applying your makeup. Doing this helps to keep the rest of the face clear of the eye makeup you are working with. When you’re finished applying your eye makeup, just whisk away the excess powder with a large velor powder brush.
- Remember to balance your face. If you are going for a strong eye, then go with a soft lip, even lip gloss. You do not want your eyes and lips to “fight” for attention.
- Keep some eye makeup removers handy for quick clean ups, and unforeseen accidents. If all else fails, use some Vaseline to clean up and then just reapply.
The Eyes Have It
Applying eye makeup is a wonderful way to stand out from the crowd. As long as you have the right tools, and go slow during the application process, you’ll be looking gorgeous in no time.
