Almay

From LoveToKnow Makeup

Almay was founded in 1931, in response to the need for makeup that was gentle enough for delicate skin. With the first hypoallergenic line of makeup available, Almay continues to provide innovative cosmetics at affordable pricing.

History

Almay was developed as a result of Fanny May Woititz’s need for makeup that was not too harsh for her sensitive skin. In the 1930’s, makeup was heavy and thick, often made from chemicals that did not take gentle skin into account. Woititz turned to her husband Alfred, a professional chemist, who tested various ingredients to see which caused irritation. Working with dermatologist Dr. Marion Sulzberger, the two developed a cosmetics formula more pure and gentle then anything else available. The name Almay was a combination of Alfred and Fanny May.

A Commitment to the Original Vision

Over the years, Almay has not lost sight of their beginnings in developing gentle and safe makeup products. They continue to be an innovative company, introducing the first entire cosmetics line of hypoallergenic products. The company also was the first to introduce 100% fragrance-free products and disclose ingredients listings. Almay continues to forge ahead by providing safety testing for allergies and create a line for the needs of contact lens wearers. Their attention to various skin types should also not be overlooked. All ingredients and technologies are tested before put into use to ensure that Almay produces the most pure, quality makeup available.

Removing the Guesswork

Which products work best for your skin type? What colors will look best? Almay has made shopping for the right products easy. Their Almay Beauty 1-2-3 formula allows consumers to answer easy questions and receive suggestions for the products that best suit the customer. In the stores, the product displays and packaging are color-coded so that everything is well-organized and easy to find.

Almay Website

Their website provides a variety of product information, tips and advice. A complete list of products, organized by category, may be reviewed online. When accessing products, eye and lip colors are organized by color; skin care and face products are organized by skin type (oily, normal/combo, dry).

The "Tips and Advice" section is helpful to site visitors, providing information such as:

  • Product Demos – demonstrations for applying a variety of products
  • Tips and Techniques – includes common questions asked about makeup colors, products and application techniques
  • Get the Look – learn how to apply makeup for a variety of looks: “Perfectly Polished,” “Dress up Your Evening,” “Sunkissed,” or “Casual Appeal”
  • Dermatologist Advice – professional answers to a variety of frequently asked questions

Online Beauty Guide

The BeautyGuide asks you to select a skin type, eye color, and favorite lip shade. With that information, you then receive a quick list of recommendations based on your answers. From there, you can choose to get a complete recommendation when you provide more in-depth answers about skincare and face (skin tone, preferred type of foundation, blush and cleanser), eyes (eye makeup remover, lashes, eyeliner, mascara preferences), and lips (preference for long lasting lip color). The result is a customized BeautyGuide with products providing the best solutions for your needs. The recommendations can be saved and/or added to a shopping list. You can even click on a schematic of the store makeup display to easily see where the products you need will be located. Each area can be clicked on for additional information, and within that section, more information can be found with another click. The personal shopping list can be printed and brought along to the store with you for easy purchasing.
